Meet the Heart Behind Power of Compassion
Behind every meal served and every life touched, there is a team of passionate, dedicated individuals who make it all possible. Our team is made up of everyday people with extraordinary hearts—volunteers, leaders, and supporters who share one vision: to bring hope, dignity, and compassion to those in need.
From cooking and serving meals to offering encouragement and prayer, each team member brings their own unique gifts to the mission. Their unwavering commitment and selfless love are the driving force behind everything we do.
We are more than a team—we are a family, united by faith and a calling to serve. Together, we believe that even small acts of kindness can create lasting change.
The Beginning of Power of Compassion in Washington, D.C.
The journey of Power of Compassion began in 2010 in Washington, D.C. Officially registered as a non-profit organization in 2011, it was founded by Randy and Evy Gunawan. While living and working in the city, God opened their eyes to the growing needs of the homeless community. Moved with compassion, they felt called to take action.
What started as a simple act of love—cooking meals at home and distributing them in local parks—quickly grew as they discovered how many people were in desperate need, especially during the harsh winter months. With hearts full of purpose, they took the first step toward building a ministry rooted in compassion, one meal at a time.
At Power of Compassion, our mission is to serve the homeless and vulnerable with love, dignity, and hope. Rooted in faith and moved by compassion, we are dedicated to meeting both physical and spiritual needs—one meal, one prayer, and one life at a time.
We are inspired by the words of Isaiah 61:1-3:
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives… to comfort all who mourn… to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”
This scripture fuels our purpose: to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in need. Through acts of kindness, consistent outreach, and the power of community, we strive to bring light to dark places and hope to hurting hearts—revealing God's love in action.
